Hello All!
Here’s the latest 3 on Thursday, where I share three things I hope bring a little joy to your inbox. As always, if you have questions or comments, just shoot me an email.
Here’s this week’s three:
- That time (last Thursday) when my Instagram post about our family’s number one rule went viral.
- Austin Kleon on parenting as an artist.
- What are the steps from honing your craft to having a career?

That time (last Thursday) when my Instagram post went viral about our family’s number one rule
Just for fun
It’s not like I tried to make a viral post last Thursday. Iโm not that smart.
It’s just that we have this rule in our house, we’ve been working on it for a long time. So much so that everyone knows it, like two plus two is four.
Yes, there are exceptions. The three Bs: blood, breathing, and burning.
But those are exceptions.
Whatโs the rule?
Don’t wake up mom.

Austin Kleon on parenting as an artist
I’m always trying to learn new ways of thinking about things, especially things as important in my life right now as being a parent.
Thatโs why I was inspired by Austin Kleon’s interview with Ryan Holiday.
I’ve been a fan of Austin’s since reading Steal Like an Artist.
I thought some of his insights during the interview were profound. I particularly liked his comparison between being a teacher vs. a librarian (time stamp).

What are the steps to having a career as an artist?
One day just for fun, I wrote down the big phases/steps I think you have to go through (probably) in order to have a career in music. The rough outline was this:
Coincidentally, longtime music analyst, Bob Lefsetz, shared his thoughts in an article called “The Ladder.” His version is way more comprehensive. He fleshes out each “rung.” If you’re a young artist, I highly recommend reading it.
Ok, that’s it for this week. Thanks for reading! As always, feel free to reach out to me for any reason.
Love,
Aaron

What Patrons Say
My wife and I were talking about being more intentional about supporting art. Aaronโs was the first that came to mind. โ David and Emily Greco, Oregon
One of the key reasons I became a patron was for the amount of really cool things you get for such an affordable price. One of my favorite things I’ve gotten so far is a typewritten letter mailed right to my house. I’ve also enjoyed getting to listen to the unreleased songs with my dad. โ Miles Hancock, Montana
It feels good to support Aaron and his music! โ Connie DeCrescenzo, Connecticut
Aaron’s music has been with me since his first album. It feels good to give in thanks for the many years of music past and in support of his ongoing work. The perks are real, but the satisfaction of imagining that I’m helping fund his family’s “Pizza Fridays” in some small way is the best part for me. – Alex Amiot, Minnesota
After all these years, heโs still my favourite artist. Supporting Aaron is a pleasure. โ Scot Sustad, BC, Canada
