I like to write before daylight. Before anyone has hurt my feelings.
I learned that from Francis Ford Coppola, and I’m glad he shared it—it’s become an important practice for me. Writing while my mind is still quiet.
It’s a noisy world. I have a hard time concentrating sometimes. Maybe you do too.
I started my career selling CDs out of the back of my Honda Accord. I lived through the iTunes era, and now the streaming and AI era. Every season brought its own changes, but one thing stayed constant: you.
Listeners have supported this work since the first CD I sold to my construction boss, Matt Ellerbusch. Then Becky Rude mailed me a check for six copies, and I mailed them to Crookston, Minnesota. Over the years, I can’t count the hundred-dollar handshakes—often at the right moment, when the literal or proverbial gas tank was empty.
Patrons continue in that same spirit.
They help keep the music coming while giving me the freedom to follow curiosity and heart instead of algorithms and hype.
My promise is simple: I’ll keep creating and putting songs into the world. But I also want you to feel cared for in return.
Here’s what that looks like:
- A growing stream of unreleased songs—demos, work tapes, ideas I’m sitting with, and songs that may never officially come out
- Essays and stories about the creative process
- For songwriters, things that have helped me over the years—craft, habits, the inner critic, the music industry
- At the $10 level and above, your name on the last track of the new album
If you’re still reading, it’s possible this is for you.
You can become a patron at the $5, $10, or $25 a month. Cancel anytime.
Regardless, thanks for being here.
Love,
Aaron
