The Breakaway: A Hockey Story

I am six years old and a member of the Old Dutch Potato Chips hockey team.

We have orange jerseys with big white letters. Aaron Degerness is our star player.

Saturday mornings are game days and this particular morning the stars align: I catch the puck and begin a long breakaway the length of the ice.

While crossing the red line I look over and see Aaron Degerness catching up to me.

Great, I think. I’ll pass over to him if I need. An assist is just as good as a goal. Great hustle, Aaron Degerness!

But Aaron Degerness is not here for my support.

In fact, something is wrong with him.

Is he jealous?

Does he want the glory for himself?

He inches closer and steals the puck away.

You’re a monster, Aaron Degerness! Shame on you, I think.

And just before I forever ban him from all my future birthday parties, Aaron Degerness yells:

β€œYou’re going the wrong way!”
