This question comes from Phaedra (age 6) whose dad relayed her question.
“Did you really do the things you sing about doing as a kid in ‘Amazing Incredible Things’? And who is Samson?”
Phaedra
Hi Phaedra –
Those are great questions. I sing about doing a lot of unbelievable stuff in “Amazing Incredible Things,” don’t I? Being an astronaut and sliding on the rings of Saturn. Fighting off danger as a cowboy.
Let me ask you something before I answer your question. Do you like to play pretend? Do you ever watch a movie or read a book and then pretend to be one of the characters?
I used to love playing pretend when I was your age.
That’s what I’m singing about in the song.
No, I didn’t “actually” do those things. But in my mind, in those moments, it certainly felt like I was doing them.
The song is really about kids like you and your wonderful imaginations. It’s about how kids can play pretend. Because, to tell you the truth, it gets harder to play pretend as we get older. Grownups get distracted by boring stuff like work and paying bills. But every so often we get lucky enough to enter back into the land of Pretend through kids like you.
Say hi to your dad for me.
Love,
Aaron
P.S. Samson is my pretend dog in the song.
