Owl in the Hollow of a Tree

This summer an owl moved in with us. In the hollow of a rotted elm near our driveway. I thought it was a him, but it was a her. Three owlets appeared midsummer.

For a long time, they were the main attraction. Pre breakfast the kids would run outside and look up. They waved and hooted. Friends would visit and point their iPhones.

The little owl family stayed with us until they didn’t anymore. One day they were just gone.

Long before I knew she was a she, I started this song. It’ll be on the kids album I’ve been working on. For the last several weeks, my two year-old son Lorentz has requested it before he falls asleep at night.

Love,
Aaron

Owl in the Hollow of a Tree

Lyrics:

OWL IN THE HOLLOW OF A TREE

THERE’S AN OWL IN THE HOLLOW OF A TREE
HE SITS UP THERE ALL THE DAY
HIS BIG EYES FOLLOW YOU AND ME
IN THE STRANGEST WAY

AND SOMETIMES RIGHT OUT OF THE BLUE
HE SINGS A LITTLE SIMPLE TUNE
HE GOES…

LA LA LA LA —
LA LA LA LA —

THERE’S A ROBIN HOPPING ON THE GRASS
PECKS HER HEAD IN THE DIRT FOR WORMS
WHEN SHE GETS ONE THEN SHE BRING IT TO HER NEST
FOR HER SQUEAKY LITTLE BABY BIRDS

AND EACH ONE MAKES A TINY WEEP
WAITING FOR ITS TURN TO EAT
THEY GO…

LA LA LA LA —
LA LA LA LA —
LA LA LA LA —
LA LA LA LA —

THERE’S A WOMAN GOING FOR A WALK
SHE HAVING A VERY FINE DAY

EVERYBODY SINGS…

LA LA LA LA —
LA LA LA LA —
LA LA LA LA —
LA LA LA LA —
